Something big just happened… as usual quietly.
@Chan Zuckerberg Initiative is committing $500M into AI + biology.
Not a grant, not a side experiment.
A serious, long-term bet.
This isn’t Meta directly. Well…
Let’s not pretend it’s disconnected from Meta.
Same ecosystem.
Same access to world-class AI talent, compute, and infrastructure.
And now – a clear move into biology.
The thesis is simple, but heavy:
AI won’t just change software.
It will change how we understand:
– disease
– drug discovery
– cells and systems inside the human body
That’s a very different level of impact in a way of timing.
We just got comfortable with AI writing text, generating images, helping with code.
Feels like progress?
But this move points somewhere else entirely.
From language → to life itself as two frontiers are starting to merge:
AI + Biology
And that layer is still early.
Not “pitch deck early”. Infrastructure early.
Which usually means:
unclear rules, high risk… and very asymmetric upside.
Funny thing – everyone is still arguing about models.
Meanwhile, capital is quietly moving into what those models will actually be used for.
And biology might be one of the biggest answers.
Curious – who else is seriously positioned at this intersection right now?
And more importantly – are we even ready for what happens if this works? Chances are low, as it’s Zuck’s, and 80% chances money would be burned, but still.
(Yeah, my job application to the foundation was ignored in 2017, so I still have a bone to pick with them).
